The Devon Brownings are the ancestors of the Loosemores by virtue of the marriage of George Loosemore my great great grandfather to Maria Browning. This chapter deals with the details of Maria’s parents Israel and Mary.
Israel Browning 1789 - 1855 and Mary ??? 1778 – 1862
Israel Browning 1789 - 1855
I have located a shoemaker called Israel Browning who is the father of Mary and Maria Browning living in Crediton in 1841. This was confirmed by Maria’s marriage certificate where her father is clearly shown to be Israel browning Shoemaker. He is married to Mary ???.

By 1861 Israel Browning has died and Mary is living with her daughter Mary and her husband Robert Loosemore in Exeter Road Crediton. The census for 1861 is shown under William Loosemore 1853 – 1910. The only recorded death of an Israel Browning is in the St Thomas district Q2 1855 vol 5b page 65. It is possible that when Mary went to Crediton, Israel went to live with another relative in the St Thomas district. More probably Israel and Mary moved to St Thomas between 1851 and 1855 and she then moved in with her daughters family after the death of Israel.
I believe that Mary Browning died in Crediton Q3 1862 vol 5b page 245.

Richard Browning 1806 - 1871
One other Browning who I have researched is Richard Browning who appears as one of the witnesses on the marriage certificate of Maria Browning and George Loosemore in 1845. I have managed to locate a Richard Browning in the census records who was born in Crediton and is probably the same person. I believe him to be Maria Browning’s uncle as he shares the same occupation as her father Israel Browning. In 1845 at the time of the wedding he was 39 which I think is probably too old to be her brother as Israel Browning would only have been 15 when he was born.

Richard Browning died age 65 in Exeter Q4 1871 vol 5b page 85.
No trace in 1891. Hannah Browning died age 82 in Exeter Q2 1892 vol 5b page 58.
The Children of Richard Browning 1806 - 1871 and Hannah ??? 1806 - 1892
It seems as though Richard and Hannah had no children apart from Henry Tatchell who is shown as an adopted son in 1871. The only other family member shown with them is Thirza Browning who according to her age in the census was born in 1843. I have searched the BMD records and the only entry that is possible for her is in 1841 in Okehampton whereas the census shows her birthplace as St Andrews Middlesex. Thirza Browning born in Okehampton Q2 1841 vol 10 page 1[5_]5. There is a record of a Thirza Browning who died in Okehampton Q2 1863 vol 5b page 277. There is also a record of the marriage of a Thirza Browning to William Benjamin Chapman or John Smith in Clerkenwell Q4 1865 vol 1b page 1132. If she was actually born in Middlesex and I have no reason to doubt this even though I cannot find the record then what is not clear is whose daughter she is. In any event if she is Richard’s niece then she must be Maria Brownings cousin.
