Dorothy Jane Coe 1893 – 1975
My paternal Grandmother Dorothy Jane Coe was born in Brixton in 1893. She was one of six children, the third daughter of Albert Edward Coe who was a Cab Driver and Jane Adelaide Coe nee Slowley.
I have managed to locate descendants of two of her siblings, Winniefred and Elizabeth otherwise known as Annis. Elizabeth’s children were Kathleen and Stephanie and I met both of them during the 1960’s. As for Winniefred, I have recently been in contact with her grand-daughter in law. Two of Winniefreds daughters survive in 2010, Gladys and Violet. I visited Winniefred’s surviving daughter Gladys and her husband in Sussex in early 2010.

I have checked the census records for 1901 and they show the Coe family living at 11 Clarks Row Brixton
Clark's Row ran roughly north-south between Robsart Street and Ingleton Street, mid-way between Brixton Road and Ingleborough Street. Immediately to the east of the odd-numbered houses, another row of cottages was inserted, called Ann's Place, built up against the small back yards of the Clark's Row houses. The immediate area was badly damaged by wartime bombing, so the land north of Robsart Street was easily cleared as public open space soon after the end of the Second World War.
The following picture clearly shows the proximity of Robsart Street, Thornton Street and Clarks Row. I have marked the locations as they are now covered with green space
The Coe family must have moved from Clarks Row to Robsart Street between 1901 and 1911 . The following image has been taken from Booth's poverty map of London compiled in 1898/99. From this it would seem that the move to Robsart Street took the family from 'Poor' to 'Middle Class'.
The 1911 census shows them at 18 Robsart Street which is the house from which Dorothy was married five years later. Winniefred Coe her older sister has left home and is staying with her grand mother Maria Elizabeth Coe in lodgings in Prittlewell Essex. The photo shows Robsart Street in 1905.
Dorothy Coe married Bernard Loosemore at the church of St Michael’s Stockwell on 1st June 1916.
At the time of her marriage Dorothy was living at 18 Robsart Street just round the corner from her future husband Bernard’s family at 14 Thornton Street.
