The Dubben Connections
The name Dubben appears in several generations of the Barter family the earliest being Sarah Dubben who married John Barter in 1808. The name recurs as the second name for four different William Dubben Barters born in 1815, 1820, 1836, 1856 and 1868 and a Susanna born in 1842.
1808 John Barter marries Sarah Dubben
1820 John and Sarah have a son William Dubben Barter
Between 1806 and 1812 John Barter’s brother Robert marries Susanna ???
In 1815 John and Susanna have a son William Dubben Barter. Why he would be given the name is unclear as the only confirmed link to the Dubbens is through his aunt Sarah Dubben. It is of course possible that Susanna, for whom I have no maiden name, is Sarah’s sister. They were born in about 1790 and 1788 respectively. Susannah gives her birthplace as Holnest. Sarah was probably born in Lillington as that is where she married John. Lillington is 2.5 miles from Holnest as the crow flies.
In 1842 William marries Frances Gartell
In 1856 William and Frances have a son William Dubbin Barter perpetuating the Dubben name
Between 1828 and 1833 Joseph Barter the son of Robert and Susanna Barter marries Mary Ann ???
In 1836 Joseph and Mary Ann have a son William Dubben Barter
In 1842 Joseph and Mary Ann have a daughter Susanna Dubbin Barter
If the theory of Susanna being a Dubben is correct then it is quite reasonable for Joseph to give his mother’s maiden name to two or more of his children.
1868 William son of William and Frances
I have checked the full 1841 records looking for possible relatives of Sarah Dubben for the neighbouring Dorset villages of Lillington, Longburton, Folke, Holnest, Caundle Marsh, Caundle Bishop Wooton Glanville, Leigh and Thornford and have also done a search for Dubben in the Somerset censuses for 1841.
The only references I can find within a reasonable range of Lillington are shown below
In the 1841 census for Longburton which is 2.6 miles from Lillington by road there are two Dubben families. William may be an uncle and Samuel a nephew or cousin.

I have not found any others within a 5 mile radius of Lillington.
There are two further Dubben families in Sydling St Nicholas about 13 miles south. If they are related at all it is probably a distant relationship.

We know that the Barters moved from the Yeovil area in 1841 to Hollis Froome just outside Dorchester by 1851. Interestingly Sydling St Nicholas is also in the Dorchester district and given the existence of two Dubben families in that village it is possible they may have been instrumental in encouraging the Barters to leave South Somerset.
Addendum to the Dubben Connections
In July 2013 I was contacted by Jenny Davie with the following information.
John Barter & Sarah Dubben - they are both in my maternal family tree. I am descended from John's brother Robert Barter who married Susanna Dubben/Dibben, Sarah Dubben's sister. Both Susanna & Sarah were christened in Holnest. Susanna Dubben Barter d/o William Dubben Barter (s/o Robert & Susanna) married George Hann in Holwell, they were my 2 x great grandparents. I hope this information answers the queries about Sarah & Susanna Dubben
So the mystery referred to above appears to have been solved. Susanna ??? was the sister of Sarah Barter. Two brothers John and Robert married two sisters Sarah and Susanna
