Henry Coe 1780 - 1846
1780 is too early to obtain birth details without investigating local parish records. Similarly marriage records would have to be accessed locally as it is to be assumed that Henry and Anne Maria would have married around the turn of the century. We know they probably had at least four children. The earliest of these was born in 1816 so it is possible that there were others born earlier in the century. If we assume that Ann Maria would not have married before her 18th birthday then the earliest we could expect to see a marriage would be about 1801 and the latest year would be 1815. I think it is unlikely that they had no children during this period except that as John Coe took over the running of the farm some time after the death of his father Henry in 1846 and the 1851 census it is probable that he is the oldest son.
The census for 1841 is shown under John Coe 1816 - 1874
Henry Coe married Anne Maria Balls on 8th December 1814
Ann Maria Balls was born about 1783 and according to the census records she was born in Shoreditch. It is possible that this fact contributed to her grandson Albert E Coe moving into the East End of London, maybe there were still relatives living there whom he might have lodged with on his arrival in London between 1881 and 1891.
There is an entry in the deaths register for Rochford Q2 1846 vol 12 page 133. The death certificate shows that Henry Coe died age 70 on 14th May 1846 at Paglesham in the presence of his son John Coe. The cause of deah is given as five weeks of intermittent fever followed by 5 days of Cholera Biliosa. His occupation is given as ‘Gentleman’.

Henry Coe died two days after the sad passing of his only daughter Ann Patience Coe of consumption aged 27. Ann had married George Fuller Browning a prosperous local Oyster merchant on 16th June 1842.
The deaths of Ann and Henry were both reported in the Chelmsford Chronicle and the Essex Standard on 22nd May 1846.
I have a date of death for Anne Maria Coe of 1855. This is shown in the death register for Rochford Q3 1855 vol 4a page 107. Her death certificate shows that she died age 77 on 1st July 1855 in Paglesham. Her occupation is given as ‘Widow of Henry Coe farmer’ The death was registered by her son Thomas Coe who was present at the death.
Anna Maria's death was reported in two editions of the Essex Standard.
Addendum to Henry Coe
According to information received from Jane Swan which she has gathered during researches into her own branch of the Coe family, the maiden name of Henry Coe's wife Anne Maria was 'Balls' and they married on 8th December 1814. Unfortunately Jane has been unable to confirm a definitive link between her branch of the Coe family and ours but she has produced some very useful information which I will be adding to this site in due course.
I have recently been contacted by Jane and apologise for misnaming her here as Jenny. This has now been corrected. I am now revisiting the information she sent me to see whether it sheds any more light on Henry and his wife Anne Marie.
